It's your personal or business identifier within the UK tax system, and you'll need it whenever you correspond with HMRC, file a Self Assessment return, or submit a Company Tax Return.

    Common Questions

What is a UTR number and why do I need one?

A Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) is a 10-digit number issued by HMRC. You need it to file Self Assessment tax returns, submit Corporation Tax returns, and communicate with HMRC about your tax affairs.

Where can I find my UTR number?

Your UTR appears on previous tax returns, HMRC correspondence, your Personal Tax Account online, or the original letter HMRC sent when you registered for Self Assessment. Your accountant will also have it on file.

I've lost my UTR — how do I get a new one?

You don't need a new one — your UTR stays the same. You can recover it by logging into your HMRC Personal Tax Account, calling HMRC's Self Assessment helpline, or asking your accountant to look it up for you.

Is my company UTR the same as my personal UTR?

No. If you're a company director, you'll have a personal UTR for your Self Assessment and a separate company UTR for Corporation Tax. They are different numbers used for different purposes.
